Management of disorders of hallucinogen use

Hallucinogen use may put a person at risk of acute harms (from self-harm, falls, other accidents, suicide) and risk the safety of others, particularly if the person is agitated or aggressive. For advice on managing these risks, including acute behavioural disturbances, see Ensuring the safety of a person with a disorder of substance use or addictive behaviour. For general advice on harm reduction in substance use (including a printable patient information sheet), see Harm reduction in substance use and addictive behaviour.

Specialist advice is recommended for managing psychosis, particularly because some hallucinogens have anticholinergic effects that may be enhanced by antipsychotic medications.
