Psychosocial interventions for long-term management of disorders of stimulant use

All forms of psychosocial interventions increase short-term abstinence and retention in treatment for disorders of stimulant use. Relapse rates are high, however, and long-term benefits of any single intervention are not clearGrigg, 2018. A combination of therapies for at least 3 to 4 months may be more effective than single short-term approaches. Techniques include cognitive behavioural therapy, motivational interviewing, acceptance and commitment therapy and contingency management; these can be combined with other relapse prevention strategies, such as regular urine drug screening and access to mentors with lived experienceGrigg, 2018Tran, 2021.
