Long-term care in the management of disorders of volatile inhalant use
Long-term treatment for disorders of volatile substance use includes:
- accessing psychosocial supports (eg from services that are specific to young people); this is critical to address the severe psychosocial disadvantage faced by many people using volatile inhalants
- cognitive behavioural therapy
- family therapy
- activity therapy—programs that engage young people in fun activities while also providing psychoeducation have been very effective in some communitiesFrancis, 2020
- residential treatment—this may be considered as a second-line treatment optionNguyen, 2016.
