Adjustments to empirical therapy for intra-abdominal infections in patients undergoing surgery

Patients with an intra-abdominal infection who are undergoing surgery require surgical prophylaxis. If the regimen used to treat the intra-abdominal infection has an appropriate spectrum of activity for prophylaxis, additional surgical prophylaxis is not required. However, adjust the timing of the dose to achieve adequate plasma and tissue concentrations at the time of surgical incision and for the duration of the procedure – see also Surgical antibiotic prophylaxis for patients receiving treatment for established infection.
