One-stage exchange arthroplasty

In one-stage exchange arthroplasty, the prosthesis is removed, soft tissue and bone are debrided and a new definitive prosthesis is implanted during a single surgery.

A microbiological diagnosis is usually made preoperatively to direct postoperative antibiotic choice (see Directed antibiotic therapy for arthroplasty device infections). Antibiotics are typically administered for a minimum of 6 weeks; however, data on duration of antibiotic therapy in this context are limited and it is uncertain whether a duration of 12 weeks results in different outcomes compared to a duration of 6 weeksBernard, 2021Konan, 2018Sandiford, 2021.
