Overview of empirical treatment for invasive Candida infection

Keighley, 2021

Empirical treatment for invasive Candida infection is usually not required. This is particularly true for patients who develop infection in the community with no recent healthcare intervention, because community-acquired candidaemia is rare in Australia.

Note: Empirical treatment for invasive Candida infection is usually not required – community-acquired candidaemia is rare in Australia.

Empirical therapy for candidaemia should be considered in patients with healthcare-associated sepsis who are at risk of fungal infection – see Risk factors for invasive Candida infection.

Strategies for prophylaxis, and empirical and diagnostic-driven treatment of candidaemia in preterm neonates or haematology and oncology patients is beyond the scope of these guidelines. Seek expert advice and refer to the Australasian Society for Infectious Diseases (ASID) Management of Perinatal Infections guidelines or the Consensus guidelines for the diagnosis and management of invasive candidiasis in haematology, oncology and intensive care settings.
