Overview of Haemophilus influenzae pneumonia

Approximately 25% of Haemophilus influenzae isolates produce beta-lactamase enzymesAustralian Group on Antimicrobial Resistance (AGAR), 2006. Phenoxymethylpenicillin is ineffective and macrolides have poor activity against H. influenzae, so these drugs are not recommended for H. influenzae pneumonia.

Oral therapy is recommended whenever possible. Use intravenous therapy for patients who:

  • have more severe H. influenzae pneumonia (eg patients with complications such as bacteraemia or pericarditis)
  • are unable to tolerate or absorb oral (or enteral) therapy.
