Assessment of Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PJP) disease severity

Patients are considered to have high-severity Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia (PJP) if they have either of the following features:

  • arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2) less than 70 mmHg on room air
  • oxygen saturation less than 94% on room air (if blood gas analysis is unavailable).

If the patient meets the criteria above, manage as high-severity PJP.

If the patient does not meet the criteria above for high-severity PJP, manage as low- to moderate-severity PJP.
