Practical information on using ivermectin
Ivermectin is used to treat filariasis, strongyloidiasis (Strongyloides stercoralis), scabies, head lice and cutaneous larva migrans. It is also used for prophylaxis of strongyloidiasis in immunocompromised adults without HIV infection.
Ivermectin is not licensed for children who weigh less than 15 kg. Absorption of oral ivermectin is improved when taken with food. A veterinary formulation of ivermectin injection, given subcutaneously, has occasionally been used for patients with strongyloidiasis who have hyperinfection or disseminated disease and who do not respond to oral ivermectin.
Ivermectin can cause hypersensitivity reactions when used for filariasis. These reactions are usually transient and respond to analgesics and antihistamines.
