Introduction to beta lactams

This topic covers practical information on using the beta lactams recommended in these guidelines. For comprehensive drug information, including precautions, contraindications, adverse effects and drug interactions, consult an appropriate drug information resource. If prescribing an antibacterial drug, consider the benefit–harm profile of the drug in the individual patient.

Beta lactams are antibiotics that have a beta-lactam ring in their structure. Beta lactams include carbapenems, cephalosporins and penicillins.

Beta lactams have a wide therapeutic index. In the majority of patients, beta lactams do not cause significant adverse effects. Serious, but infrequent, adverse effects to beta lactams include neurological toxicity, nephrotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, hypersensitivity, and neutropeniaCimino, 2021.

For information on monitoring beta-lactam plasma concentrations, see Monitoring beta-lactam blood concentrations.
