Treatment duration for typhoid and paratyphoid fevers
Treatment for typhoid and paratyphoid fevers should continue for at least 48 hours after fever resolution. Treatment duration depends on the antibiotics usedNabarro, 2022:
- if ceftriaxone, cefotaxime or meropenem is used for the entire course of treatment, a minimum of 10 days is recommended
- if azithromycin or ciprofloxacin is used for the entire course of treatment, 7 days of treatment is recommended
- if ceftriaxone, cefotaxime or meropenem is switched to either azithromycin or ciprofloxacin, an additional 7 days of treatment (ie from the day of the switch) is recommended.
Treatment duration refers to the combined total days of empirical and directed therapy, and includes both intravenous and oral therapy. Use intravenous therapy for the entire course of treatment for children younger than 1 year.
