Prevention of heart failure

Early treatment of potential causes of heart failure can delay or prevent heart failure. This includes effective management of elevated blood pressure, diabetes or atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Patients with asymptomatic left ventricular systolic dysfunction may benefit from treatment with an angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor (ACEI) and a beta blocker. Sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors have been shown to reduce the risk of hospitalisation for heart failure in patients with type 2 diabetes associated with cardiovascular disease or other cardiovascular risk factorsMcGuire, 2021.
