High-risk superficial vein thrombosis
An isolated superficial vein thrombosis is at high risk of extension to a proximal DVT or PE if it:
- extends to within 3 cm from the deep venous system
- propagates despite anticoagulant therapy given for an intermediate-risk superficial vein thrombosisThrombosis Canada, 2021.
Treat patients with an isolated high-risk superficial vein thrombosis with an anticoagulant for 3 months; for dosages, see direct-acting oral anticoagulants1, warfarin or parenteral anticoagulants for VTE treatment.
