Acquired epidermolysis bullosa

Acquired epidermolysis bullosa (also called epidermolysis bullosa acquisita [EBA]) is a rare autoimmune blistering skin condition resulting in tense subepithelial blisters on areas of trauma. Unlike inherited epidermolysis bullosa, epidermolysis bullosa acquisita is not inherited and usually presents in adulthood. Localised blisters usually occur on easily injured areas (eg hands, knees, elbows, buttocks); sometimes blisters can also occur on mucosal surfaces (eg in the mouth, nose and eyes). Refer patients with suspected epidermolysis bullosa acquisita to a dermatologist for diagnosis and management.
