Potency and site of application
In addition to the specific diagnosis and the severity of the condition, an important factor when choosing a topical corticosteroid is the site of application.
A mild corticosteroid should be used in sensitive areas of the body (eg face, axillae, groin, nappy area) because topical corticosteroids penetrate the skin more in these areas. Occasionally, and usually in consultation with a specialist, a stronger corticosteroid is used on sensitive areas for up to 2 weeks.
A moderately potent corticosteroid is usually used on the rest of the limbs and trunk.
A potent or very potent corticosteroid is usually used on thick-skinned areas (eg palms, fingers, lichenified areas on wrists or ankles, feet, soles).
