Deterioration or relapse of contact dermatitis

If contact dermatitis deteriorates or relapses, consider whether the patient has not maintained preventive measures at work, home or play. Also consider other reasons for contact dermatitis deteriorating or relapsing, including:

  • a new contact allergy (eg to rubber gloves), especially if the distribution, pattern or severity changes
  • infection (especially staphylococcal infection)
  • allergy to active or inactive ingredients in topical preparations used for treatment (eg fragrances, preservatives)
  • environmental change (eg exposure to, or substitution of, a more irritant product at work, home or play).

Consider referral to a dermatologist for patch testing if new allergens are suspected.
