General measures to minimise irritation of rosacea

To minimise irritation of rosacea, avoid triggers of rosacea, and minimise factors that cause flushing (see Factors and conditions associated with flushing)Weiss, 2017 or irritate affected skin (eg skincare products). Use an emollient soap-free cleanser to reduce irritation, and regularly use an emollient to improve the skin condition. Avoid essential oils.

Minimise sun exposure and use a low-irritant sunscreen.

Avoid topical corticosteroids—these are not effective for rosacea, and the patient can have a severe rebound flare if therapy is stopped, even if a mild corticosteroid is used.

A green-tinted foundation can help to mask redness, if desired.

The Better Health Channel (Victoria) publishes a patient information sheet on rosacea.
