Can a person object to treatment?

All people have the right to refuse medical treatment. This includes children, and adults with impaired capacity. It encompasses the right to understand what the treatment involves and why it is required.

In the event that a person refuses treatment, the law recognises that refusal might not be the result of an informed decision. In this situation, the person’s objection may be overridden, but only in specific circumstances. See Decision making for children and Decision making for adults.
