Self-injury

Thoroughly investigate the cause of self-injurious behaviour, including situational, psychological, physiological and genetic factors; see Initial assessment and support. Consider referral for sensory assessment; funding may be available through the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Teaching alternative (adaptive) behaviour is the first-line intervention for people with developmental disability who have self-injurious behaviour; medication is often not effective.
