Developmental effects

Early developmental milestones in children with fragile X syndrome may be achieved later than average, or be mildly delayed. Fragile X syndrome can result in:

  • global developmental delay
  • intellectual disability
    • affects most males, and 30 to 50% of females
    • ranges from significant learning disability to profound intellectual disability, with most people in the mild to moderate range
  • speech, language and communication difficulties
  • poor fine and gross motor coordination
  • specific learning difficulties.
