Introduction

Hypoglycaemia is considered nonsevere when the patient is conscious, capable and able to accept or self-administer oral treatment. Ideally, confirm hypoglycaemia by measuring blood glucose concentration. However, if measurement is likely to be delayed, start treatment immediately.

Oral glucose can be taken to raise blood glucose concentrations for nonsevere hypoglycaemia in children, adolescents or adults. When oral glucose is impractical for children and adolescents (eg vomiting, young child refusing to swallow), an alternative is to use a minidose glucagon injection.
