Other electrolyte imbalances associated with hyperosmolar hyperglycaemia

Hypophosphataemia and hypomagnesaemia are common in hyperosmolar hyperglycaemia.

There is insufficient evidence to support the routine measurement and replacement of phosphate. However, if hypophosphataemia persists after hyperosmolar hyperglycaemia has resolved, oral or intravenous phosphate replacement should be considered.

Magnesium replacement should only be considered if the patient has symptomatic hypomagnesaemia or hypocalcaemia.
