Gastroparesis

Diabetes of longer duration is the most common cause of gastroparesis (delayed gastric emptying). Consider gastroparesis if patients with diabetes have persistent symptoms such as bloating, epigastric fullness, early satiety, nausea and vomiting. However, symptoms correlate poorly with severity of gastroparesis and abnormal gastric emptying, so the diagnosis may be overlooked.

Stabilising blood glucose concentrations may improve symptoms of gastroparesis. Management of gastroparesis can be difficult—seek expert advice. For information on presentation and management of gastroparesis, see Gastroparesis.
