Psychosocial concerns

Women with hyperglycaemia in pregnancy (including gestational diabetes) should have their psychosocial situation periodically assessed during pregnancy and, if indicated, be referred to appropriate support services1.

A diagnosis of hyperglycaemia in pregnancy (including gestational diabetes) can be stressful, because of the demanding diabetes management regimen as well as concern about the impact of diabetes on the baby. In addition, some women are already facing stresses in their family and/or employment situations.
