Glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) units (Appendix 18.1)

In Australia routine laboratory reporting of glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) is in Système International (SI) units (mmol/mol) in line with international standards. The previous HbA1c measurement reporting as a percentage often appears in brackets after the SI units, and this dual reporting in mmol/mol and % is still commonly used.

For a list of unit equivalence between mmol/mol (millimoles HbA1c per mole of total haemoglobin) and % (HbA1c as a percentage of total haemoglobin), see Glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) equivalent units. An online unit converter is available on the NPS MedicineWise website.

For information on the use of HbA1c to diagnose diabetes, including limitations of use, see Glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) testing.
