Glycaemic management in women with type 2 diabetes during labour

Women with type 2 diabetes should have their blood glucose concentrations monitored every 2 hours during labour, or hourly if intravenous insulin and glucose infusions are used. If the glucose concentration rises above the target range, insulin should be given, usually by intravenous infusion together with a glucose infusion (see Glycaemic management in women with type 1 diabetes during labour).

If metformin has been used during pregnancy, it should be stopped before induction of or at the onset of spontaneous labour, or when fasting before a caesarean section.
