Postpartum glycaemic management in women with pre-existing diabetes
Women with diabetes need careful restabilisation of their blood glucose concentrations after delivery.
Note: Women with diabetes are at increased risk of hypoglycaemia in the postpartum period.
In the first few months after delivery, the blood glucose concentration target range is 5 to 10 mmol/L. This is higher than usual because there is an increased risk of hypoglycaemia in the postpartum period. For a patient using continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) or flash glucose monitoring, the suggested interstitial glucose concentration targets in the postpartum period are the same as their usual targets (see Glycaemic targets for adults with type 1 diabetes or Glycaemic targets for adults with type 2 diabetes).
