Type 2 diabetes

Ideally, all antihyperglycaemic drugs other than insulin and metformin should be stopped before a woman with type 2 diabetes tries to conceive. Stopping all noninsulin antihyperglycaemic drug(s) suddenly in early pregnancy leads to deterioration of the glycaemic profile.

To ensure glycaemic targets are achieved, it may be necessary to add insulin or to adjust the insulin dose (if already using insulin). Most women with type 2 diabetes will require insulin later in pregnancy, even if metformin is continued.

When changing antihyperglycaemic drug treatment, monitor blood glucose concentrations more frequently to ensure the glycaemic profile does not deteriorate.
