Gastrostomy tube insertion and removal in adults
This topic addresses the insertion and removal of gastrostomy tubes in adults. For information about the insertion or removal of jejunostomy tubes, seek expert advice.
Gastrostomies and other enteral devices can be inserted endoscopically, radiologically or surgically. The method of insertion can determine the type of tube inserted and how it can be removed. A gastrostomy can be either externally removed or require endoscopic removal. It is important to follow manufacturer recommendations on the method of removal of enteral tubes.
The removal of gastrostomy tubes should only be performed by someone trained and skilled in the procedure.
Further information on the method of insertion, different types of tubes and the method of removal is available from the NSW Agency for Clinical Innovation website.
