Inappropriate use of laxatives in adults
Prolonged use of laxatives is common in the community. Ensure all patients with constipation have addressed diet and lifestyle factors that can contribute to constipation. Excessive or inappropriate use of laxatives can cause electrolyte disturbances, including hypokalaemia, and may indicate an eating disorder. Be aware that some proprietary products marketed for weight loss contain a laxative.
People who misuse stimulant laxatives may have difficulty resuming a normal bowel pattern when laxatives are stopped.
