Faecal impaction in children

Uncontrolled soiling is common in children with faecal impaction. Children presenting with uncontrolled soiling, who are usually toilet trained, should be referred to a paediatrician or paediatric gastroenterologist.

Initial management of faecal impaction in children is to disimpact the stool (bowel washout)—macrogol 3350 preparations enable this to be done at home. For a faecal disimpaction regimen using a macrogol 3350 preparation, see the Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne website.

If this treatment is successful, follow with maintenance laxative treatment (see Initial therapy for constipation in children 1 year or older).

If treatment to disimpact the stool is unsuccessful or not tolerated, expert advice from a paediatrician or paediatric gastroenterologist is recommended for consideration of rectal therapy and investigation of the cause.
