Overview of peptic ulcer disease

Peptic ulcer disease is most commonly caused by Helicobacter pylori infection or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use. In a small number of patients with peptic ulcer disease, neither risk factor is present. Rare causes include Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, Crohn disease and viruses.
