Prophylaxis of postoperative nausea and vomiting in children

Gan, 2020

If possible, reduce risk factors for postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) (eg avoid using emetogenic drugs [especially opioids], ensure adequate hydration).

All commonly used antiemetics can have significant adverse effects, particularly in children; consider relevant contraindications and precautions, as well as potential adverse effects, before prescribing. Children at increased risk of PONV should receive combination antiemetic therapy using drugs with different mechanisms of action. A commonly used regimen is:

dexamethasone 0.15 mg/kg up to 4 mg intravenously, as a single dose at the start of anaesthesia dexamethasone dexamethasone dexamethasone

PLUS

ondansetron 0.1 mg/kg up to 4 mg intravenously, as a single dose at the end of anaesthesia1. ondansetron ondansetron ondansetron

1 Ondansetron should be given by intravenous injection over at least 30 seconds or by intravenous infusion in compatible fluid.Return
