Preparation for upper gastrointestinal endoscopy in adults
Adults preparing for a diagnostic or therapeutic upper gastrointestinal endoscopic procedure (gastroscopy), including endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), are required to withhold solids:
- from midnight the night before the procedure if scheduled for the morning
- for 4 to 6 hours before the procedure if scheduled for the afternoon.
The consumption of fluids should be stopped at least 2 hours before anaesthesiaAustralian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) and the Faculty of Pain Medicine, 2021.
For children requiring a diagnostic or therapeutic gastroscopy, seek expert advice about preparation requirements (including fasting).
