Cognitive behavioural therapy for pain management
Cognitive behavioural therapy is a well-established and effective approach for pain management, although the exact content of therapeutic programs can differ between services and clinicians.
Cognitive behavioural therapy is based on two key principles: cognitions strongly influence feelings and behaviour, and behaviours affect thought patterns and emotions. It focuses on changing negative perceptions and reactions to pain and other stressors, while establishing helpful behaviours that improve engagement in activities and quality of life. Patients are supported to identify and challenge unhelpful thoughts (cognitions), emotions and behaviours that contribute to the pain experience. Patients should discuss their expectations and establish appropriate management goals.
