Addressing patient, family and carer concerns about opioids in palliative care

Some patients and their families and carers worry about adverse effects of opioids, and have concerns that opioid use will shorten life or means death is imminent. It is important to discuss these fears and explain that safe opioid use changes the quality of life, not its length. Patients may also be reassured to know their body naturally makes chemicals (endorphins) that work in the same way as opioids. Ensure patients and their families and carers know who to contact if there are unexpected problems or concerns.

The Palliative Care Australia website provides patient and carer information on opioid use in palliative care.
