Inhaler technique
Correct inhaler technique is essential for good asthma outcomes. Up to 90% of patients have incorrect inhaler technique, but most are not aware that they have a problem. Correcting inhaler technique can lead to significant improvement in asthma symptom control.
Before prescribing an inhaler device, train the patient in its use and confirm that they are able to use it correctly. Avoid prescribing multiple different inhaler devices if possible, to reduce confusion. See Inhalational drug delivery devices for further information.
Check inhaler technique at every opportunity by watching the patient use their inhaler, and comparing their technique with a device-specific checklist; see Checklist for device use. Correct the patient’s technique using a physical demonstration, focusing on incorrect steps.
