Investigations for acute inflammatory polyarthritis in adults
For detailed advice on the utility of investigations for suspected inflammatory polyarthritis, see Investigations for musculoskeletal symptoms in adults.
Specific investigations for suspected inflammatory polyarthritis (eg autoantibody assays, viral serology) may not be required initially and can often be postponed until after a trial of symptomatic treatment. Screening for viral causes is only useful if antiviral treatment exists (eg treatment for hepatitis C). Hepatitis serology is also important if initiation of immunomodulatory therapy is being considered, as reactivation of hepatitis B can occur.
If an early presentation of inflammatory arthritis (such as RA) is strongly suspected, refer to the separate topic on Rheumatoid arthritis for a detailed discussion of relevant investigations.
