Accurate diagnosis of musculoskeletal symptoms in children and adolescents involves recognising patterns on history and examination and, if necessary, judicious use of investigations. If a serious rheumatological pathology is suggested on clinical features, referral for early diagnosis and prompt treatment may avert or minimise permanent joint damage and disability.
