Psychological techniques for fibromyalgia
Clinicians can support patients to design strategies to reduce situational stresses, identify coping strategies that help manage pain, and provide guidance and support for goal setting. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) may improve pain and function. Attention to good sleep practices is also valuable. Mindfulness-based approaches may also be beneficial in fibromyalgiaBawa, 2015Crowe, 2016.
Other psychological techniques may be considered based on an individual’s circumstances, although evidence is lacking on efficacy—see Psychological techniques for managing pain for more information.
