Overview of immunoglobulin A (IgA) vasculitis

Immunoglobulin A (IgA) vasculitis (formerly known as Henoch-Schönlein purpura) is the most common vasculitis in children and adolescents. It can occur in adults but is uncommon. In both children and adults it is predominantly a self-limiting disease; however, if affected, adults are more likely to develop severe or progressive kidney disease than childrenBatu, 2018. The presentation, investigation and management of IgA vasculitis is very similar for both adults and children.

Most people can be managed by their general practitioner, although some may require specialist referral if there is doubt about the diagnosis (eg differentiating a purpuric rash). People who have IgA vasculitis should have monitoring for IgA nephropathy with their general practitioner for at least 6 months.
