Acute management (including first aid) for soft-tissue limb conditions

Acute management (including first aid) for soft-tissue limb conditions and injuries historically includes Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation (RICE) therapy. Initially, rest is a safe and reasonable approach until the diagnosis is known (eg sprain versus fracture). RICE therapy may be used for up to 48 hours, but there is no strong evidence to support prolongation of this for more than 48 hours. Although the benefit of RICE therapy is supported by widespread use in practice, its effectiveness has not been proven in randomised controlled trials.

Heat, massage, alcohol consumption and vigorous exercise involving the injured part are contraindicated in the first 48 hours following injury.
