Contraindications and precautions for the etonogestrel implant

The only contraindication (UKMEC 4) to use of the etonogestrel implant is current breast cancer.
The etonogestrel implant requires expert clinical judgment or referral (UKMEC 3) for individuals with:
  • unexplained vaginal bleeding (suspicious for a serious condition) before investigation for the cause
  • past breast cancer
  • severe (decompensated) cirrhosis
  • hepatocellular adenoma or malignant liver tumour
  • ischaemic heart disease, stroke or transient ischaemic attacks developing during use.
The etonogestrel implant is generally safe to use (UKMEC 2) in individuals with a past history of ischaemic heart disease, cerebrovascular disease or venous thromboembolism (VTE).

See the Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare website for a full list of precautions for the etonogestrel implant.
