Overview of depot medroxyprogesterone contraception

Depot medroxyprogesterone acetate (DMPA) is a progestogen-only contraceptive given as an intramuscular injection. It works by suppressing ovulation and thickening cervical mucus.

Depot medroxyprogesterone may be an option:

• if a contraindication to estrogen precludes the use of combined hormonal contraception
• in individuals taking drugs that induce liver enzymes
• if a discreet method of contraception is desired.
