Other drugs for premenstrual syndrome
Spironolactone may help relieve the physical symptoms (eg abdominal bloating, swelling, breast discomfort) and psychological symptoms of PMS, but evidence is limited. It must be used with contraception due to its potential to cause defective virilisation of the male fetus.
Evidence to support the use of complementary and alternative medicines for PMS (eg calcium, evening primrose oil, Vitex agnus castus [chasteberry]) is limited. For more information, see the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) Guidelines .
