Laboratory investigations in individuals with sexual difficulties

Laboratory investigations are not generally necessary unless history or examination suggests underlying medical conditions such as:

• hypothyroidism
• diabetes
• amenorrhoea
• male androgen deficiency
• increased cardiovascular disease risk
• infection warranting testing for pelvic inflammatory disease or other sexually transmitted infections.

Treat underlying conditions, and reassess to determine whether treatment has improved sexual function. Specific treatment for sexual dysfunction may also be required, despite treatment of the underlying cause.
