Nondrug therapy for postpartum lactation promotion

Nondrug measures are first-line treatment for postpartum lactation promotion, and should be continued regardless of whether drug therapy is used.

To promote lactation in an individual with low supply of breast milk:

  • encourage more frequent breastfeeding from both breasts
  • assess and treat breast engorgement and nipple trauma
  • provide advice on correct positioning and attachment
  • encourage regularly expressing after breastfeeds for additional breast stimulation and drainage
  • refer to a lactation consultant for ongoing support.

Low supply of breast milk may cause significant distress. Discuss the individual’s concerns, and consider the need for additional psychological support.
