Overview of postpartum lactation suppression

Postpartum lactation suppression is the process by which lactation is intentionally interrupted for personal or medical reasons. Lactation eventually stops without infant suckling, but the process may be painful or uncomfortable, due to breast engorgement, breast milk leakage and mastitis. Lactation suppression aims to reduce these symptoms and support the individual. Some individuals seeking lactation suppression may not identify as cis women; for links to resources to support gender-inclusive healthcare, see Trans and gender diverse healthcare.
