Gastric lavage
Note: Gastric lavage is not recommended for the management of poisoning.
Gastric lavage involves repeated instillation and aspiration of fluid through a nasogastric or orogastric tube in an attempt to remove the contents of the stomach. Gastric lavage is no longer recommended for the management of poisoning because it is associated with a high risk of pulmonary aspiration and is less effective than gastrointestinal decontamination with activated charcoal.
