Toxic dose

In adults and children, ingestion of more than 5 mg/kg of nicotine is potentially fatal.

The total amount of nicotine in a cigarette is 13 to 30 mg, with the cigarette butt containing 5 to 7 mg of nicotine. One cigarette butt can contain enough nicotine to cause toxicity in a 10 kg child if ingested.

E-cigarette liquid for immediate use in vaping contains 6 to 36 mg/mL of nicotine. E-cigarette liquid is also available in concentrations of up to 200 mg/mL, which requires dilution before use in vaping. Ingestion of these concentrated liquids can cause life-threatening toxicity, especially in a child.
